Tips and Best Practices for E-commerce Platform Migration

Throughout my career, I have carried out numerous e-commerce migrations, moving from smaller platforms to large national or international platforms and vice versa.

What is the purpose of the migration? Is it really necessary to change? What improvements will the migration bring? What is the complexity involved?

What does your current platform offer? What needs to be immediately available on the new platform? What are the medium and long-term needs on the new site?

Tool evaluation

What platforms meet your business needs? What about open source platforms?

Choice of partners

Who will develop the new site? Who will take care of the integration with the ERP? What about the other necessary integrations?

Joint assessment

With the objectives and requirements already defined, the platform chosen, and the partners aligned, it is time to analyze the financial viability of the project. Considering the entire investment, what is the expected return and in what time frame?

The last migration I led took about six months to analyze and another six months to execute the project. Note that the analysis period corresponds to the execution time and I can say that an error in the analysis phase may result in significant losses in the future. So it's crucial to dedicate enough time to this initial step.
